What’s On in Valletta: the Rolex Middle Sea Race, Halloween Weekend & Late October

- Things To Do In Valletta
There is something different about Valletta towards the end of October.
The pace shifts, the evenings feel more atmospheric, and the city’s calendar becomes packed with culture, sailing, theatre and Halloween activity. For anyone looking to spend a few days in the capital, it is a particularly good time to experience Valletta from morning through to late evening.
Here is our Casa Ellul guide to making a weekend of it.
Start with the Rolex Middle Sea Race
One of Malta’s most iconic annual sporting events returns to the Grand Harbour this October.
The Rolex Middle Sea Race starts on 17 October, bringing crews, yachts and spectators into Valletta and the surrounding harbour area. The build-up to race day creates a distinct atmosphere across the city, with the Grand Harbour becoming the focal point for one of the Mediterranean’s best-known sailing events.
For guests staying at Casa Ellul, it is an opportunity to experience Valletta at one of its most animated moments – with the city, harbour and race activity all within easy reach.
If you are visiting for race week, make a weekend of it.
An evening of culture
Late October also offers several opportunities to experience Valletta’s cultural programme.
Chamber Conversations, taking place on 26 October, brings contemporary chamber music to Pjazza Teatru Rjal and works perfectly as part of a slower city evening – dinner, a performance and a walk through Valletta afterwards.
Culture beneath the streets
For those arriving later in the month, Folk Underground continues through 28 October, bringing Maltese folk music into the underground spaces beneath Valletta.
It is a fitting way to experience another side of the city: its history, traditions and spaces that are often easy to miss above ground.
Halloween weekend in Valletta
By the final weekend of October, the atmosphere shifts again.
From 30 October to 1 November, The Rocky Horror Show takes over the Mediterranean Conference Centre, bringing one of the clearest Halloween events to Valletta this year.
Costumes, theatre and late-night city streets make the weekend an ideal excuse to stay in the capital rather than simply visit for the evening.
The appeal is less about attending every event and more about the atmosphere itself: performance, dining, evening walks and Valletta at its liveliest after dark.
Make the most of the weekend
A late-October stay in Valletta can easily become more than a single event.
Arrive for race week, spend an evening at a performance, explore the city’s architecture and cultural spaces, or stay through Halloween weekend and experience a different side of the capital.
That is part of what makes Valletta work so well for a short break: there is always something happening, but the city remains compact enough to experience at your own pace.
Stay in the heart of it
From the Rolex Middle Sea Race and cultural performances to Halloween weekend, late October offers more than one reason to spend a few days in Valletta.
Casa Ellul places you in the heart of the city, giving you an ideal base to experience what is happening around you – while still having somewhere quieter to return to at the end of the day.
