Upcoming Music Events in Malta – July 2019

There is always the echo of music somewhere in Malta...

We are a place of celebration and jubilation throughout the year, and every musical taste is catered for in one of the many events held across the islands. This July there are two of Malta’s biggest music events taking place.

Malta Jazz Festival Monday 15th July – Saturday 20th July

The majority of performances during the Malta Jazz Festival take place in Valletta and are outside at the city’s favourite landmarks such as the Parliament Building, Triton Fountain and City Gate. The smooth saxophone and deep double bass echoing through the streets are really something special and the music can be enjoyed in the warm summer sun or under the stars, as there are performances starting from around midday to 9pm. This year, it’ll be Kenny Garrett’s saxophone you’ll hear, and he’ll be joined by other jazz legends including vocalist Jazmeia Horn and drummer Omar Hakim.

Most of the concerts are free, but there are also a few exclusive and intimate Masterclass events at Offbeat or Merchant Street where the talented will share their techniques. Tickets can be purchased from www.festivals.mt/jazzfestival. Look out for special concerts in Mdina and Floriana too, a good excuse to get out and about and see other parts of Malta.

Malta Music Week & Isle of Mtv 9th July – 14th July

The Isle of MTV is Malta’s big summer party. It’s part of Malta Music week and now in its 13th year attracts a huge number of dance music fans to the islands.

This year’s line-up includes Dj Mag’s #1 Martin Garrix and star of the moment Bebe Rexha. The Main Stage is in Il-Fosos Square where the free concert kicks off the week of fun on Monday 9th July. Get there early as it starts at 3pm and runs into the night. Following the concert, there is a great choice of after-party events across Malta’s clubs throughout the week, including a Vegas themed pool party at Medasia, a Sunset Boat party and Rudimental DJs at Café Del Mar. Stock up on sun cream and bottled water, it’s going to be a long week of partying!

Where to stay in Malta for July’s music events

Valletta really is the heart of Malta; it’s where these great events will be taking place and is the capital city too. Before and after the main events there’s plenty to see and do, amazing places to eat and drink, and many a historical sights to be seen. After the hustle and bustle of the busy events, it’d be ideal to sneak off somewhere close-by that is also quiet and comfortable away from the revellers. A boutique hotel like Casa Ellul is the perfect spot. In the centre of Valletta on Old Theatre Street, the hotel is well placed for walking to and from the music hotspots and Valletta’s main attractions. However, with just 9 individual exclusive suites attracting discerning guests, the hotel is tranquil and beautiful and will offer you the chance to wind down and soak up the evening in the free-standing bath or roof top jacuzzi. If you’ve booked your tickets for the Isle of MTV or Malta Jazz Festival, why not treat yourself to a couple of extra nights of luxury too!
